LOREN

03/12/2011 9:30 pm

Highly regarded among Australia’s leading musicians, Loren has just released his much-anticipated sixth release and third studio album, taking his emotive and lyrically driven music to a new level of heart, soul, groove and energy. “Listening to the Moon” is the culmination of three years of songwriting and the first album Loren has recorded with a solid band, featuring Mitch Mclennan on bass and Beck Flatt on percussion, as well as guest appearances from respected musicians such as Tijuana Cartel’s Josh Sinclair.

Loren’s magical blend of lyrically driven folk, pop, reggae and roots music has gathered a strong following over the last eight years of his musical career. Heralding from the hills and valleys of Northern NSW, Loren has a string of national touring and festival performances behind him, and has played with the likes of Dan Sultan, Lior, The Beautiful Girls, Dave Matthews, Xavier Rudd and others.

KOOII

Kooii are a band pushing boundaries in contemporary Australian music. Their compelling fusion of Afrobeat, reggae and world rhythms have earned them a glowing reputation, both on record and in the live arena. Their music brings together soulful vocals, three part harmony and a super tight rhythm section in an ageless and familiar sound.

Over the last eight years, Kooii have toured extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand, gathering a devoted following along the way. Their travels have seen them on the big stage at festivals including Woodford, Reggaetown, Island Vibe and Kuranda Roots, supporting the likes of Blue King Brown, The Cat Empire and The Beautiful Girls.

On stage, Kooii deliver a dynamic live show made for dancing, delving from the hypnotic depths of reggae rhythms into the pulsating groove of Afrobeat. The intrinsic understanding shared between these talented musicians allows for colourful and explosive improvisation. The music is free-flowing, uplifting, heart-warming and will leave you relishing every last drop.

Kooii’s song “One Step” recently took out ‘Song of the Year’ in the Blues/Roots category of QMusic’s annual awards. The song is taken from the album “In This Life” (2010), a stunning album that follows their landmark debut “Beads On A String” (2005).

Both albums are independent releases available through Vitamin Records.

THE ARGONAUTS

31/12/2011 9:30 pm

The Argonauts are the newest Rock Band to grace the Northern Rivers. This four-piece generates a massive sound combining shades of symphonic classical music, electronica, and indie rock all falling under a heavy Space-Rock show fit for stadiums. Delivering heavy, searing guitar riffs, graceful and gritty vocals, concerto style piano pieces, fuzzed out bass sounds, and forceful beats, The Argonauts present a show not to be missed.

Formed in February 2011, locals Mike Watson (guitar, piano, synth) and Tom Doyle (guitar, lead vocals), Phil Reed (bass) and Anastassijah Scales (drums, percussion) have been hard at work on their first demo (as yet untitled) and bringing their music to the live domain.

Their first live performance at the 2011 National Campus Band Competition was broadly acclaimed and The Argonauts received the highest heat point score in the Queensland division. Critics said “Fantastic new sounds in a classic Hard Rock style!”, “…delivers a smashing performance.”, “Love [The Argonauts'] sound! So want to hear more!!!!”

Alice Dwyte is the first single taken from Sabrina and the Red Van’s debut album ‘Cheap Romance’, which is set for release March 2012.

With serious vocal prowess, dirty 70s rock guitar and driving drum and bass, all complimented with commanding vocal harmonies – this track is an exciting insight of what’s to come when ‘Cheap Romance’ is released next year. The single features Joe Cope (Eagle and the Worm) on keys. Based in Melbourne, Sabrina and the Red Vans inject soul and groove into the hard worn genre of rock ‘n’ roll.

The Red Vans are a first class line-up headed by Sabrina Sandapa; nominee for best female vocalist at the Los Angeles Music Awards (2007), 1st place in the Folk/Acoustic sector of the Australian Songwriting Contest (2009), and winner of the 2007 Coke a Cola live and local unsigned competition.

Lead guitarist Greg Whitehead, backing vocalist and bassist Suzanne Kinsella and drummer/percussionist Andrew Rogers come together as the Red Vans, an exceptional line up enabling Sabrina to expand her creative vision for her music and earn an outstanding reputation as a must see live act.

Sabrina’s debut EP release, Mirror Mirror, (formally released July 2010 through MGM) received commercial radio airplay on the Hot 100 (nationally), Triple J as well as other various community radio stations including PBS & Triple R.
The success of the EP has seen Sabrina and the Red Vans playing support for headline acts around Australia, including Ross Wilson, Ash Grunwald, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu and Blue King Brown.
